Pain relief and essential oils

I use essential oils to manage my own pain. A few years ago I injured my back. I slipped a disk and I can tell you the pain was unbearable. My doctor prescribed me a really strong cocktail of pain medication, all with terrible side effects, if used long term. I started using oils again and have been able to manage the pain amazingly well. Using essential oils in combination with yoga and Thai massage I don’t need to take any medication now for the pain.

Using essential oils is a great way to manage pain and reduce the need for pain killers. There are essential oils for every type of pain and pain relief. Some work as analgesics, which mean that they relieve pain. Others reduce inflammation and others are good for treating rheumatic and arthritic pain.

Many oils are relaxing so help to relax muscles and calm nerves. Depending on what type of pain you have you can also make blends. A combination of oils that do a combination of different things specifically for your needs.

A therapist who specialises in knowledge about essential oils can advise you well and even make a blend for your specific pain type. However here are some basic tips to get going by yourself.

I recommend making a massage oil to apply to your skin for pain relief. You can dilute essential oils in a carrier oil such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, sweet almond oil or castor oil. There are specific benefits depending on what carrier oil you choose to use.

  • Coconut oil is anti-inflammatory and an analgesic, it reduces pain and skin inflammation.

  • Jojoba oil is very close to sebum (the skins natural oil) so with this carrier, oils penetrate the skin effectively.

  • Extra virgin olive oil helps to reduce pain and inflammation in the skin.

Now you have chosen your carrier oil what do I do next?

For headache – Blend 1-2 drops of essential oil with one tablespoon of a carrier oil and apply a small amount of the mixture to the temples and massage gently. Ensure you avoid your eyes.

Headache can also be relieved by inhaling the oil. Place a few drops of the oil onto a cloth or tissue, or use an aromatherapy diffuser or vaporizer. My favourites for headache are peppermint and lavender. Lavandula latifolia is best for blocked sinuses and Lavender Angustifiolia is better to induce sleep, so for a tension headache.

For sinus pain – Inhaling essential oils is a very simple way of alleviating sinus pain. Boil some water, pour it in a large bowl and add a few drops of your essential oil. Put a towel over your head and lean over the stea

my bowl to inhale the vapours. Do this for about 10 minutes. Repeat as and when required.

Bath soak – Good to soothe tired, aching muscles, relieve arthritis and rheumatism. Put a few drops of essential oil in a hot bath, you can also add 2-3 cups of Epsom salt to enhance the effect. It’s a good idea to mix the essential oil drops in a small amount of carrier oil first and then add to the bath. My favourite oil for my bath is a blend created by Doterra. I don’t usually like blends but if someone has done an excellent job you can’t argue with that, It’s a blend of Spruce, Ho Wood, Frankincense, Blue Tansy, and Blue Chamomile with Fractionated Coconut Oil to offer an enticing fragrance that promotes tranquillity and relaxation. Spruce, one of the oils in Balance, was used by Native Americans for health and spiritual reasons and is still used today to bring harmony to the mind and body. Ho Wood, Blue Tansy, and Blue Chamomile can ease anxious feelings, while Frankincense provides a grounding, balancing effect on emotions.

Massage oil for larger areas – Use about 5-7 drops of essential oil per 30 ml of carrier oil and massage this oil blend into any painful body part. Some people recommend more drops per amount of carrier oil but essential oils are powerful and when you use good quality ones, like the therapeutic grade ones from Doterra, you really don’t need to use much. Hot or cold compress – To make a hot compress to relieve sore muscles or joint pain take about a pint of hot water, as warm as you can comfortably tolerate, and add a few drops of your selected essential oil to it. Soak a small towel or face cloth and squeeze out the excess water. Then place it over the painful area. Some people find that alternating between hot and cold compress helps to alleviate their pain, especially if they have a new injury. A cold compress is made exactly the same as the hot compress, but ice or cold water is used instead of hot water, and the compress is replaced when it has heated up to body temperature.
